The effects of traumatic experiences on any level can be debilitating to our health and detrimental to our emotional balance. Traumatic events may lead to isolation and feelings of helplessness. Symptoms including anxiety and depression may lead individuals to develop a variety of dysfunctional coping strategies.

This course will look at the therapeutic application of the philosophy and practice of yoga when working with trauma survivors.

Topics will include issues of addiction, nervous system dis-regulation and the use of yoga to work effectively and compassionately with trauma survivors. Specific yoga forms (asana), therapeutic breathing (pranayama) and grounding techniques will be explored. Participants will learn to teach safe, body-based, self-regulation techniques and to develop trauma-sensitive yoga programs to meet the needs of a wide variety of people to support their day to day functioning and long term healing.

This training is suitable for anyone working with populations in need. This includes counselors, physiotherapists, massage therapists, yoga teachers and beyond.
